  • In the Workstation, each dataset file must be uploaded together with a metadata file. Dataset files should prepared and saved in .csv format or comma-delimited text files. This is a type of file format in which each piece of data is separated from the next by a comma (including the column headers).

Preparing the CSV Files From the Data Input Templates

  • After downloading the templates for "Countries in Crisis" and "Unfavourable Prospects" (from here), you will see that each file consists of two named worksheets:

1. The Input worksheet

The data should be entered here, either by selecting values from the lists or entering text directly into the table cells.

2. The Output worksheet

Is protected and cannot be edited, but reflects the "Input worksheet" entries.
Here any 'list' values are converted into the corresponding code reference value, as required by the Workstation.
  • When the data entry in the "Input worksheet" is complete, go to the "Output worksheet" and save this as a .csv file.

Check the CSV File

  • Open the created CSV file in either Notepad or Textpad and not in Excel (see CSV Notes below). Check to see if any empty rows proceed the last data row. An empty row, will appear as a servies of commas with no values i.e ,,,,,,.

If empty rows are present, please delete them and save the file.

Upload the Dataset File into the Workstation

  • Each created (and checked) dataset .csv file should be uploaded with its corresponding metadata (available from here)

Viewing the Outputs

  • After both the "Countries in Crisis" and "Unfavourable Prospects" have been uploaded successfully into the Workstation.
  • From the Main Menu bar:
Go to Tools --> then click on GIEWS Early Warning Outputs

The generated tables and maps can be viewed and when satisfied exported as a .zip file.

CSV Notes

  • Please noteyou should avoid re-opening a .csv dataset file in Excel once it has been saved, as this could resultin some loss of of the pre-defined formatting (especially with the Date column values).
